What is an FFL?

A Federal Firearms License (FFL) is a license issued by the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) that authorizes a person or company to engage in the business of buying and selling firearms.

Do I need an FFL to sell on ShootingBid?

Individual sellers (non-dealers) do not need an FFL license to sell their personal firearms. However, if you are in the business of selling firearms, you are required by federal law to obtain an FFL.

What shipping carriers accept firearms?

FedEx and UPS accept handguns shipped between licensed dealers (FFL to FFL). USPS accepts long guns (rifles and shotguns) shipped by unlicensed individuals to FFLs. Always check current carrier policies as they can change.

What if the buyer fails their background check?

If the buyer fails the NICS background check, the firearm is returned to the seller. The seller keeps any payment received less return shipping costs. Policies vary so discuss this with your FFL before shipping.

Can I do an in-state private sale without FFL?

Some states allow private party transfers between residents of the same state without going through an FFL. However laws vary by state and ShootingBid strongly recommends using an FFL for all transactions for legal protection.
