FFL Information

Most firearms purchased on ShootingBid must be transferred through a licensed firearms dealer (FFL). Here's what that means and how the process works.

What is an FFL?

An FFL (Federal Firearms License) holder is a dealer licensed by the ATF to engage in the business of firearms. When you buy a firearm online, it can't be shipped directly to your door — it ships to an FFL dealer near you, who verifies your eligibility and completes the transfer.

How the transfer works

  1. Win or buy the firearm on ShootingBid.
  2. Choose a local FFL dealer and let them and the seller know.
  3. The dealer sends their FFL to the seller, who ships the firearm to the dealer.
  4. You visit the dealer in person, complete ATF Form 4473, and pass a background check (NICS).
  5. Take your firearm home once the transfer is approved, subject to any state waiting period.

Transfer fees: FFL dealers typically charge a small fee ($20–$50) to receive and process a transfer. This fee is paid to the dealer, not to ShootingBid or the seller.

Items that may not require an FFL

Some items can ship directly to you, depending on your state and local laws — for example, ammunition, optics, holsters, parts, and accessories. Each listing indicates whether FFL is required. Always confirm what your state allows.

Know your local laws

Firearm laws vary significantly by state and locality, including restrictions on certain models, magazine capacities, and waiting periods. You are responsible for ensuring a purchase is legal where you live before bidding. When in doubt, ask your FFL dealer.
